From our early years program through to middle school and on to the International Baccalaureate diploma in theater, JIS students are encouraged to explore the theatrical arts in many fulfilling ways. JIS sees theater classes and the shows staged throughout the school and during high school IASAS Cultural Conventions as an important means of stimulating creativity in problem solving and an outlet for emotions, thoughts, and dreams. At the center of JIS’ theater programs is communication and how important it is at a diverse school such as ours and in all the world, that is a stage, after all.
Music is a universal language and at JIS we speak it very fluently. In their early years, students experiment with musical instruments as they explore musical elements such as pitch, volume, and timbre in a fun environment. This forms a base for further development in middle school where students can select from band, strings and vocal classes while also participating in concerts throughout the year. In high school the JIS music program broadens with more choices and opportunities, including being a delegate at Cultural Conventions with our other IASAS high schools.
Learning about the visual arts at JIS is based upon drawing, painting and sculpture, as well as design in jewelry, pottery, weaving, fabrics, etc., and design applied to fields such as commercial graphics and home furnishings. JIS classes in photography, video, film, design and computer art may focus on students creating art, on learning to criticize or appreciate art, or some combination of the two.
Dance is a serious, independent discipline with special characteristics fostering many kinds of learning. It also has great cognitive and transfer-of-learning potential. Dance classes at JIS teach the values and skills of creativity, problem solving, risk taking, higher-order thinking skills and making good judgments. These skills are presented on JIS stages throughout the school and during Cultural Conventions with our other IASAS high schools. JIS students gotta dance!
Offered in both the JIS Middle and High Schools, design technology is literally a hands-on course that aims to produce literacy in design and related technologies. It involves problem solving and designing in a practical context for the modern world. Design technology students design and create in workshops and develop informed knowledge about technology in general. High school students focus on global environmental issues and cover core topics in ergonomics, modeling, raw materials to final production, innovative and classic design.
